| If your answer is NO to any of these questions, read on! |
| Every year, many horses of various breeds born or bred in the state of New Jersey compete for state money in the NJ Department of Agriculture New Jersey Breeder Awards program. In 1998, for example, 379 horses, representing 14 different breeds, competed for thousands of dollars of cash prizes awarded by the state through representative associations. To be eligible, horses must be certified as New Jersey bred horses by the appropriate representative breed group in the state, and their owners or lessees must be members in good standing of that breed group. |
| What is a New Jersey Bred Morgan? |
| a. Any foal dropped in the State of NJ, except for those dropped by a mare
arriving in the state for the sole purpose of foaling. |
| b. The get of any stallion standing only in NJ during the breeding season
of the year in which the foal was conceived. A stallion standing in NJ must breed only in
NJ for any yearly breeding season and MUST NOT BE BRED OUT OF NJ during that year, though
he may be trained and shown elsewhere. |
| c. Foals resulting from the transport of semen from a stallion standing
the full season in the State of NJ will be considered a NJ Bred, providing blood typing
or DNA of
the stallion, mare and foal is carried out to authenticate parentage and semen transport
is agreeable to the national registry of the breed. |
| d. Foals resulting from an embryo transfer from a mare, standing the full season, in the State of NJ, will be considered NJ Bred, providing blood typing or DNA of the mare, stallion and foal is carried out to authenticate parentage and embryo transfer is agreeable to the national registry of the breed. |
| A Morgan is eligible for NJ Breeder Awards if: |
| a. It is an eligible NJ-Bred Morgan (see previous), and |
| b. It is registered with the AMHA or (if a weanling)
is eligible to be
registered. |
| c. The horse is owned or leased in whole or in part by a member of the
MHANJ (who need not reside in the State of NJ); |
| d. Its AMHA registration papers and leases are recorded with the MHANJ
Points Secretary, and a $10 fee that covers both the Breeder and Year End Awards is paid
annually. |
| e. The horse is entered and judged in his particular class with at least
one other horse at the New Jersey All Breed Horse Show. |
| f. If the animal is the only horse in his particular class, he will not receive points but will receive credit for having shown at the All Breed Show. He will also receive the 1st place show prize money. |
| What can a New Jersey bred Morgan win? |
| New Jersey bred Morgans can compete for cash prizes at the annual New Jersey Bred All Breed Horse Show, sponsored by the NJ Department of Agriculture, and are also eligible for year end prize money, providing that they show at the All Breed Horse Show. In 1999, 11 Morgans competed for a total of $1,460.00 at the All Breed Show, and $2,253.01 in year end awards. Many more were eligible to show, but did not participate. |

| How can I sign up for and New Jersey Bred awards? |
| You must be a member of the Morgan Horse Association of New Jersey and you must register and submit the fee for club year-end awards (the registration form has a place to sign up for the NJ Bred awards for horses that are eligible - CLICK HERE to download a form). There is no additional fee for the NJ Bred awards registration. You must sign up for the awards prior to participation in the first show. For every show you enter, you must also submit a record of your placings on the form provided for this purpose (CLICK HERE to download a form) |
