The AMHA/World Morgan Futurity (WMF) Stallion Service Auction funds the AMHA Marketing & Promotion program, the World Morgan Futurity, and our Regional and Class "A" Morgan Horse Shows. We all know that 2009 was a tough year for the economy, for stallion owners and breeders, as well as affecting many other facets of our lives. Thankfully, many stallion owners stepped up to the plate so that breeders would support this important event with their buying power. They knew their stallions' get and the breeders that buy their services would have the opportunity to win money back through the WMF Auction Rewards program. In addition to the regular Futurity money, the Auction Rewards program adds additional money to the winning jackpots and also gives back to stallion owners. Mare owners receive bonus money thanks to the fall WMF Trainers Months and Publications Auction. It is a winning situation for all!

The $10,000 Auction Bonus is given to the first horse that is a product of a stallion service purchased in the AMHA/WMF auction and wins a World Morgan Futurity class. This opportunity begins their yearling year at the Grand National. If an eligible yearling does not win, the bonus moves into their two-year-old year, where the winner from five classes is eligible. The bonus continues on to their three-year-old year if not won (out of seven classes eligible), and then on to the Alumni Division. If more than one horse wins, the $10,000 is divided among the winners. Each class year has an Auction Rewards Bonus of $10,000 that starts when they are yearlings. In 2010, the Two-Year-Old Futurity horses are vying for this bonus from the results of the 2007 Stallion Service Auction and the 2009 yearlings are eligible for their $10,000 bonus from the 2008 Stallion Service Auction.

The 2010 Stallion Service Auction roster includes AFF Leroy Brown, Aljaks Double Whammy, Astronomicallee, BEF Ivan, Bellerophon, Bri-B XTC, Cartier, Dragonsmeade Icon, Favorite Son, Futurity French Command, GDT James Bond, Graycliff Tony, Gulfwind Sir William, HollyBrook Stage Rage, JW Sporting Victory, KDS Star Wars, Lamborghini In Black, Man In Motion, Mastroianni, MEM Heart And Soul, MEM The Patriot, Minion Millennium, Mizrahi, Nostradamus, On Line, Pondview Tres Bien, Stand And Deliver, Stonecroft Trilogy, Supernova, SYP High Definition, Tara's Firewalker, Tequila Rhythm, The Master's Touch, Town Assets, Treble's Master Player, Treble's Tanqueray, Trebles Double Exposure, Ultras Special Agent, and UVM Morgan Horse Farm choice.

It is important that you bid and that you win that bid. Support the AMHA/WMF Stallion Auction that benefits all of Morgandom!  Go to www.morganhorse.com/auction and bid today!

The Legacy Mares series will resume in the February issue of The Morgan Horse magazine with an article on the daughters of Tug Hill Commando. This article is written in collaboration with the folks who have stewarded this glorious stallion throughout his life and career. There has been early response from enthusiastic advertisers who will be promoting the influence of this great sire on their herds and in their show strings. The magazine staff looks forward to assisting others who will want to take advantage of this promotional opportunity.

Cowboy and cowgirl up to March as we celebrate the Working Western and Colorful Morgan! This issue will be flipped with our February issue and promises some great reading, including literature on the great Morgan bridle horses and the trainers who worked them in the vaquero fashion, as well as a continuation of our Legacy Mares series featuring the mare Cotton Candy. Don't miss your opportunity to advertise your bloodlines in this issue!

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is a devastating disease characterized by three main features: obesity, insulin resistance, and laminitis. Certain breeds or individual horses are predisposed to EMS, and often are referred to as "easy keepers." The University of Minnesota is looking to better understand the environmental role (diet and exercise) and genetics in the development of EMS. To achieve this, they need the help of horse owners to accumulate data on as many horses with EMS as possible.

By better understanding the disease and being able to identify genetically susceptible horses, management practices can be initiated to better protect them from developing disease. By assisting in this project, horse owners will provide the college with information essential to further understanding EMS and ultimately determining ways to better manage and treat horses suffering from the disease. To learn more about the equine metabolic research project and how you can get involved, please visit: www.cvm.umn.edu/equinegenetics/EMS/home.html. The website includes an initial survey to determine if your horse is a candidate for participation in the EMS research project.
